80s and 90s rock music in 2026

Ben Funkhouser aka fish narc started working in underground music as a high school student in the late 00s, attending, booking and performing DIY shows in the Pacific Northwest. His love for punk, indie, noise and rap led him from songwriting to producing and back. His most recent release, 2025’s frog song, came out on the storied indie label K Records, and marked a clear shift back to his PNW rock roots. The follow-up, the soon-to-be released full length Uncle presents a more honed and polished take on the 80s and 90s rock music that inspired his recent oeuvre, and was produced in collaboration with Alex Farrar (responsible for the production and mixing of recent works by MJ Lenderman, Wednesday and Hotline TNT among others). Funkhouser’s ephemeral post-punk band Hausu put out one record on Hardly Art in 2013, before he pivoted to making rap beats. As a producer, he is best known for his work in the Soundcloud Rap movement as an architect of what came to be called emo rap and collaborations with Lil Peep, Lil Tracy and Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Since the late 2010s, he has mostly returned to songwriting, releasing a string of albums with Pop Wig and K Records, and touring with a live band containing members of Krimewatch, Phantasia and Gag.
